What Nutrition Knowledge Do You Need Before Studying

Our courses are open to learners without prior education or experience in nutrition. Students start from different points—ranging from complete beginners to those who already work in the field professionally. Instruction therefore progresses from fundamental principles to broader context and the practical application of the knowledge acquired.

Our courses are currently in preparation. The study system described here is the one we use in our courses. Subscribe to the NutriCourses Newsletter for new articles, practical nutrition insights, and updates when enrolment opens.

Prior knowledge is not a prerequisite

If you want to start studying nutrition, you don't need to complete another course first or independently study the basics of biology, physiology, or biochemistry.

All our courses can be taken by complete beginners with no prior formal education in nutrition. The instruction is structured so that you can gradually build on the knowledge gained in previous lessons and develop a more comprehensive view of each topic.

But that doesn't mean the content is tailored only to beginners. The courses are also taken by people who have been involved with nutrition for a longer time or use it in their professional activities.

What if you're starting completely from scratch?

A complete beginner is introduced, in the early parts of the program, to basic concepts and principles, which are later followed by more complex topics.

Therefore, you do not need to know in advance, for example, the functions of individual nutrients, the details of energy metabolism, or the principles of meal planning. You acquire this knowledge gradually during your studies while learning to understand their interrelationships.

Most importantly, don't skip the basics just because some topics may seem simple at first glance. It is precisely mastery of these fundamentals that enables you to better understand more complex topics and their interconnections.

Students don't all start from the same place

People with very different levels of experience enroll in the courses.

Some have only recently become interested in nutrition, while others have been reading specialized books for years, following research, or have experience creating their own meal plans.

People who use nutrition knowledge in their professions also study with us – for example, trainers, hospitality professionals, nutrition consultants, pharmacists, physicians, and other specialists in health- and lifestyle-related fields.

Having different starting levels is therefore nothing unusual during the studies.

Beginners and more experienced students work with the same material differently

For someone without prior knowledge, studying is mainly about gradually building a basic framework. They learn to navigate the individual topics, understand technical terms, and connect new information into larger wholes.

A student who already has some knowledge can use the same lessons differently. They will confirm some information, refine others, and often uncover connections that were not obvious during previous self-study or practice.

Prior experience can therefore make studying easier, but it is not a prerequisite for getting started.

You learn the technical terminology gradually

Nutrition uses a number of technical terms from physiology, biochemistry, metabolism, and food science. You don't need to know them in advance.

New terms appear in the context of specific topics, and you return to them gradually in subsequent lessons. This way, they do not remain isolated definitions but become part of a broader system of knowledge.

The goal is not to learn as many technical terms as possible. What matters most is understanding what they mean and how their meaning translates into practice in nutrition.

So who is the program for?

The courses can make sense for people who want to better understand nutrition for their own needs, as well as for those who want to use the knowledge in their profession.

The initial motivation can therefore vary greatly:

  • you want to better understand your own diet,
  • you have been interested in nutrition for a longer time and want to organize your knowledge systematically,
  • you work in sports, hospitality, or another field where you regularly encounter nutrition,
  • you want to pursue nutrition professionally,
  • you already work in the field and need to expand some topics or place them in a broader context.

The courses are therefore intended for complete beginners as well as for people who already have experience with nutrition and want to further develop their knowledge or apply it in practice.

What matters more than prior knowledge?

Prior knowledge can be an advantage, but by itself it does not determine how well a student will progress through the course.

More important is to work with the material continuously, return to topics that are unclear, check your understanding, and gradually transfer the information gained to concrete situations.

That is why, in addition to the lessons themselves, we use tests, practical assignments, mind maps, and a student advisory service, which help to continuously consolidate new knowledge, connect it, and use it in practice.

You therefore don't need to arrive with ready-made nutrition knowledge. Study is the place to gradually acquire it, organize it, and learn how to work with it.

What our graduates say about the study

Kateřina Hrňová

The course was truly very comprehensive in terms of information. I was pleased that the course doesn't just teach that something is black or white, but rather emphasizes the importance of finding the root causes of problems, as well as the overall complexity and coherence of the information we need for practice. The live sessions were always beneficial, and Mr. Jelínek is truly an expert and professional in his field. I will definitely take advantage of additional complementary courses in the future.

I chose your course on recommendation of my friend who told me about course for fitness trainers. When I started with fitness, I realized that exercising and nutrition go hand in hand. I found out that I can counsel my clients with exercising, but if they didn′t eat healthy food, it was just partial solution. I gained a lot of information during the course and online form suited me well. Course was great and I hope that I will be successful nutritional advisor thanks to this course. I am happy that after graduation of course work with Martin Jelínek doesn′t end and that he offers advice for graduates and keeps helping them. I can warmly recommend this course.

Bc. Mária Šimková

After writing and publishing two cookbooks, I started to further deepen my education in the field of nutrition, and when I was searching for a suitable nutrition course, the ATAC course caught my attention with its good recommendations. Its length and structured content appealed to me. This is not common, especially in Slovakia, where nutrition consultant courses are generally quite superficial and short. I was looking for something more. Mr. Jelínek's courses offered me precisely what I was looking for. The course was systematic and excellently crafted to provide a solid foundation on which I could continue to build. The broad scope of the study gave me the understanding that nutrition is highly individual and not black and white. Albert Einstein said: "The important thing is not to stop questioning." I consider this truth crucial when studying nutrition. Studying with humility and constant questions at the end of sentences ensures that nutrition does not become just a theory but, on the contrary, a living whole where we primarily consider the individuality of each person. The duration of the nutrition course is a huge plus for allowing the information to settle in the mind, deepened by additional study, and enabling us to piece it together like a puzzle. Besides the rich theory, I see the ZOF application as a significant advantage, where we almost daily created model meal plans for a wide range of clients with different needs. Therefore, the course was also practical, which every student will appreciate. The state-authorized exam was an excellent verification of my knowledge and a confirmation that the ATAC course is truly well-designed and comprehensive enough to master this exam, which is not yet available in Slovakia. It was also a starting point for further studies that I began. The GAPS protocol and working in child nutrition fascinated me so much that I delved deeper into the study of this protocol. Our gut microbiome is closely linked with our immunity and health, both physical and mental, influencing our cravings, mood, and hormones. It is worth taking care of it. I am immensely grateful to Mr. Jelínek for his humanity and professionalism, his openness and diligence, his personal approach, and his valuable advice.
