Education has a positive impact on health

Overweight and obesity shift metabolic balance into a state that gives rise to a wide range of noncommunicable diseases. The most commonly cited are cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes, which we know lead to increased mortality. This is a global trend, with the number of affected individuals rising every year. It is a sad fact that the problem also affects the pediatric population, where over the past four decades their number has increased tenfold. [1]

In light of these sobering figures, ways are being sought to reverse these long-term trends. One meaningful approach may be to educate the population more and better in taking care of their own health, including their approach to diet.

Scientists from the University of Leeds, in collaboration with the WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO Europe), also focused on this, examining the relationship between socioeconomic status, education, and diet. Research involving more than 27,000 people from 12 countries showed that in lower-income European countries, the nutritional quality of the diet improves with increasing levels of education. [2]

It is good to know that educational status has a positive effect on attitudes toward healthy eating. In 2018, 59% of adult Europeans were overweight or had obesity, driven by poor diet. We can therefore hope that the data obtained will serve as a strong argument for supporting education of the population, particularly in nutrition.
