Leaky gut syndrome

Leaky gut syndrome, also known as increased intestinal permeability, is a condition in which the intestinal barrier becomes porous, allowing undigested food, toxins, and bacteria to enter the bloodstream. This condition can lead to a range of health problems, including chronic inflammation, autoimmune diseases, allergies, and other digestive issues. Causes of leaky gut syndrome may include chronic stress, excessive alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet, and certain medications.

From a nutritional perspective, it is important to recognize that diet can play a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of leaky gut syndrome. A diet high in processed foods, sugars, and fats can damage the intestinal barrier and increase the risk of developing this syndrome. Conversely, a diet rich in fiber, fermented foods, and healthy fats can support gut health and help restore its permeability. It is also important to maintain adequate fluid intake and avoid foods to which an individual has allergies or intolerances.

Hello,

Given the wide range of difficulties that leaky gut syndrome can cause, I am curious if there is any examination that can reliably diagnose this syndrome?

Furthermore, I am interested in whether the use of systemic antifungals, for example, can contribute to the development of the syndrome (I am asking because of my own experience with a whole range of difficulties right after this treatment)?

Thank you in advance for your response.

There is an examination available, such as the lactulose/mannitol test (where a solution containing lactulose, mannitol, and glucose is consumed on an empty stomach, followed by a 5-hour urine collection to monitor the levels of the individual sugars). The causes of the problem are numerous, and it is often a multifactorial phenomenon. However, medication use is cited as one of the real causes, especially with long-term medication.

Mgr. Martin Jelínek has been systematically involved in nutrition education since 1999. He is the founder of ATAC, the educational company behind NutriCourses, and the author of an educational system focused on nutrition, healthy lifestyle, and the practical application of nutrition knowledge.

He graduated from the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University in Brno. Throughout his professional career, he has combined nutrition, education, and the practical application of acquired knowledge. His educational system also includes the ZOF (Zone of Optimal Functioning) learning application, where students turn theory into practical work with meal plans.

In 2007, he launched the first intake of a six-month course focused on the education of nutrition advisors. Over time, this course became the foundation for the further development of the educational system and a range of specialised courses.
