Yogurt

Yogurt is a dairy product that originates from the Balkans and the Middle East. Its production involves the fermentation of milk using two types of bacteria - Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus. These bacteria convert lactose in milk into lactic acid, resulting in its thickening and the creation of a characteristic sour taste. Yogurt can be made from various types of milk - cow's, goat's, sheep's... Yogurt is a source of high-quality proteins, calcium, and probiotics. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that positively affect the function of the intestinal tract. Yogurt can help strengthen the immune system, improve bone health, and support heart health. When choosing yogurt, it is advisable to avoid products with high levels of added sugars or artificial ingredients.

Good evening,

I would like to ask your opinion on the combination of fruit with dairy products, such as yogurt. This is often presented as a suitable breakfast/snack (accompanied by, for example, flakes and nuts). However, dairy products should not be combined with sources of sugar, is that right? And if this combination is not advantageous, where would you recommend including fruit? (I read somewhere that it is best to eat fruit on its own, but that seems nonsensical to me—high GI, poor macronutrient ratio,...).

Thank you very much for your response.

This combination is not problematic until the point when it starts causing any "issues" for a particular individual. Generally, a healthy individual can digest such a mixture without any complications, so it is unnecessary to restrict the diet just because the individual components might digest slightly better when consumed separately. In situations where a person suffers from digestive problems (dyspepsia, inflammation...), it is instead advantageous to consider and preventively avoid certain combinations, which may (but not necessarily) apply to dairy products with fruit.

Mgr. Martin Jelínek has been systematically involved in nutrition education since 1999. He is the founder of ATAC, the educational company behind NutriCourses, and the author of an educational system focused on nutrition, healthy lifestyle, and the practical application of nutrition knowledge.

He graduated from the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University in Brno. Throughout his professional career, he has combined nutrition, education, and the practical application of acquired knowledge. His educational system also includes the ZOF (Zone of Optimal Functioning) learning application, where students turn theory into practical work with meal plans.

In 2007, he launched the first intake of a six-month course focused on the education of nutrition advisors. Over time, this course became the foundation for the further development of the educational system and a range of specialised courses.
