RMR

RMR, or Resting Metabolic Rate, is a measurement of energy consumption in a resting state. It represents the amount of calories the body uses per day while at rest. This value includes the energy required for basic bodily functions, such as breathing, blood circulation, regulation of body temperature, cell growth and repair, and other processes essential for life.

RMR is an important indicator for nutrition and health because it gives us an idea of how much energy the body needs for its basic functioning. This value varies depending on several factors, including age, gender, body weight, and muscle mass. Knowing your RMR can be useful for planning diet and exercise, especially if you have goals related to weight loss or muscle building.

Hello, I am interested in understanding the difference between BMR and RMR (resting calories). Are resting calories important for any calculations? On my Garmin watch, after entering my personal parameters, only resting calories are displayed and not BMR. Thank you.

BMR is the amount of energy expended in a resting state in a thermally neutral environment while fasting - energy expenditure in this state is solely determined by the functioning of vital organs. RMR (resting metabolic rate) is essentially the same value, but measured under less strict conditions - it represents the number of calories the body burns at rest (i.e., without performing any physical activity). In practice, it is somewhat irrelevant which value you use, because neither is accurate regarding the conditions of real measurement and always deviates from reality (it is just a question of to what extent). Furthermore, in the area of attempting to monitor energy balance, keep in mind that calculations of the amount of energy in a daily diet can show a variation in value of even a few hundred calories. These facts tell us that addressing energy balance does make sense, but only in a general sense, because you can never calculate exact numbers. The decisive process is monitoring the body's manifestations, which alone provides true information following dietary changes...

Lecturer and author of the educational system

Mgr. Martin Jelínek has been systematically involved in nutrition education since 1999. He is the founder of ATAC, the educational company behind NutriCourses, and the author of an educational system focused on nutrition, healthy lifestyle, and the practical application of nutrition knowledge.

He graduated from the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University in Brno. Throughout his professional career, he has combined nutrition, education, and the practical application of acquired knowledge. His educational system also includes the ZOF (Zone of Optimal Functioning) learning application, where students turn theory into practical work with meal plans.

In 2007, he launched the first intake of a six-month course focused on the education of nutrition advisors. Over time, this course became the foundation for the further development of the educational system and a range of specialised courses.
