Lactobacilli

Lactobacilli are a genus of bacteria that belong to the group of so-called probiotics. Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when consumed in sufficient quantities, provide health benefits to humans. They are known for their ability to ferment sugars in food into lactic acid, which is primarily utilized in the production of fermented dairy products. These bacteria naturally occur in our digestive tract, mouth, and vagina. Lactobacilli help maintain the balance of intestinal microflora, can assist in the treatment and prevention of a range of health issues, and support the immune system.

Good day, Mr. Jelínek,
what do you think about intestinal microbiome testing offered by various clinics and laboratories? Would you recommend any laboratory, do you have experience with this? Also, I would like to ask, if a person eats healthily, exercises, doesn't smoke, and doesn't drink, which specific Lactobacilli or probiotics would you recommend?
Thank you for your response.

The analysis of the microbiota is meaningful because it provides information that cannot be obtained otherwise. It is important to bear in mind that analytical methods are constantly evolving and will provide much more accurate information in the future, including their interpretation. A certain disadvantage is the cost of the examination, but this is common with new technologies. When looking for a suitable laboratory, always choose based on what is offered for the required cost, i.e., what information is provided and especially how well it relates to your individuality.

In the case of probiotic supplementation, it is simple - the market is evolving very quickly, with trends either towards the widest possible number of strains in each dose or towards the inclusion of a smaller number of specific representatives to influence particular metabolic processes. It depends on your target. In general, however, you won't go wrong if you take preparations with a wider spectrum of Lactobacilli as a preventive measure.

Mgr. Martin Jelínek has been systematically involved in nutrition education since 1999. He is the founder of ATAC, the educational company behind NutriCourses, and the author of an educational system focused on nutrition, healthy lifestyle, and the practical application of nutrition knowledge.

He graduated from the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University in Brno. Throughout his professional career, he has combined nutrition, education, and the practical application of acquired knowledge. His educational system also includes the ZOF (Zone of Optimal Functioning) learning application, where students turn theory into practical work with meal plans.

In 2007, he launched the first intake of a six-month course focused on the education of nutrition advisors. Over time, this course became the foundation for the further development of the educational system and a range of specialised courses.
