Heme iron

Heme iron is an organic form of iron found in meat. It is highly bioavailable and is considered the most efficiently utilized form of iron for humans.

Is heme iron blocked when combining meat with dairy products? Thank you.

If you are asking about the bioavailability of iron from food, i.e., the combination of meat with a dairy product on the same plate, it is important to note that divalent elements, which include calcium abundantly found in dairy products, hinder the absorption of iron. Such a combination is not the most advantageous.

When dealing with the intake of dietary supplements, they should always be taken with a time interval from meals (preferably in the morning on an empty stomach). Otherwise, you significantly reduce the effectiveness of the supplement, to a greater extent when consuming foods containing concentrated sources of calcium, magnesium, or zinc...

Hello,

I would like to know if it is possible to provide pregnant vegans with sufficient heme iron and from which sources. Thank you in advance for your response.

Addressing heme iron in the diet of vegans is essentially unnecessary because it is only found in meat. For a vegan diet, the intake of iron should be considered as follows:

1. It is necessary to increase the overall intake - focus on food, leave supplements as a backup option.
2. Since iron in plant sources is bound to anti-nutritional components that complicate its absorption, make sure that the food is thoroughly cooked, especially grains and legumes (for these, longer soaking, sprouting, or fermentation is also beneficial when possible).
3. In this situation, it is additionally advantageous to support iron metabolism after its absorption, which is best achieved with a slightly increased intake of vitamin C (from any sources).

By adhering to these rules, you will significantly improve iron metabolism. It is, of course, advantageous to perform checks from blood tests...
