Nutri Courses

Advisory

Hello,

My friend has undergone surgery and lost one kidney. Will he need to follow a renal diet for the rest of his life with protein reduced by half? If the existing kidney is functioning normally, can he eat a standard diet, provided that he restricts, or preferably completely eliminates, alcohol and coffee and limits salt?

If the other kidney is healthy, there is generally no need to adhere to strict dietary measures. This means you can eat "normally" in the sense of the standardly recommended ratios of macronutrients. However, it is advisable not to overburden it unnecessarily (with high intake of alcohol, salt, proteins...).
