Advisory

Hello,

I increasingly find multivitamin supplements on the market (mainly originating from the USA) that do not contain magnesium and calcium in their composition. Can you please advise on the reason for this?

Thank you.

This is a new trend in the production of multivitamin supplements. There are primarily two reasons for this:

1. It is argued that both elements have an antagonistic relationship. Some studies indicate that their concurrent use can impair their bioavailability, which is why there is an effort not to combine them in one product.

2. There is also a trend towards the "personalization" of supplementation, which means that manufacturers aim not to include substances in multivitamins that are known to not be commonly deficient in the population. This is logical because it is unnecessary (and often health-risking) to take something that the body does not lack. Calcium is somewhat overestimated in practice, as Western populations receive a sufficient amount due to regular consumption of dairy products. Its metabolic deficiency is not a result of dietary shortage but rather inadequate absorption caused by insufficient production of vitamin K by the gut microbiota, or possibly a deficiency of vitamin D, which affects the metabolism of this element.
