Advisory

Good day,
What would you recommend on a daily basis for a 1-year-old child with a cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) to ensure they get enough calcium, or possibly a suitable supplement if the child is no longer breastfed? Thank you.

If at this age the child is no longer breastfed and cannot consume dairy products for health reasons, there are still a number of options parents can consider:

1. Aim to deliberately ensure sources of calcium in the diet.
The most significant are bone broth, and additionally, products from nuts and seeds (almond beverages, etc.) are advantageous.

2. Ensure adequate intake of fiber, prebiotics, and probiotics (fermented products).
These significantly influence the diversity of the gut microbiota, which produces vitamin K, crucial for the overall level of calcium absorption from the intestines (i.e., it's not so much about the amount of calcium ingested, but rather the body's ability to absorb and metabolize it well).

3. Monitor the intake of vitamin D, which is critically deficient in the population.
Calciferol regulates calcium metabolism, and in cases of its deficiency, increased calcium intake does not resolve the issue. Rich sources include fatty fish (or fish oil).

4. If the child displays a calcium deficiency, supportive supplementation is always an option.
