Advisory

Good day, Mr. Pharmacist.
Is it important nowadays to supplement children with omega-3 in the form of supplements? How can I identify a quality product?
Thank you for the response.

In general, supplementation is necessary in situations where a regular diet is insufficient to provide the body with the required nutrients. Regarding the importance of omega-3 fats, it is essential not only to ensure their minimum intake according to reference values but also to consider their ratio to omega-6 fats, which are commonly in excess. This is true for all age categories, including children. If fatty fish are not a regular part of the diet, an omega-3 deficiency is most likely to occur, and supportive supplementation should be implemented in such cases. The quality of these products is very difficult to define because there are numerous criteria for their evaluation—thus, it depends on the individual user which combination they prefer. Considering the environmental burden, marine algae have emerged as very advantageous sources in recent years; however, they are slightly more expensive than fish oil supplements. It is always beneficial for the product to contain antioxidants, which stabilize omega-3s and simultaneously have the ability to support their metabolism in the body.
