Colon

The colon is a key component of the digestive system, playing a crucial role in the absorption of water and electrolytes from undigested food. It is also home to billions of bacteria that aid in digestion and the production of certain vitamins. A healthy colon is essential for maintaining overall health and well-being. If the colon is compromised, it can lead to a variety of health issues, including constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and even colon cancer.

Nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining colon health. A diet rich in fiber, such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, can help support healthy colon function by promoting regular bowel movements and aiding in the elimination of waste from the body. On the other hand, a diet high in processed foods and fats can increase the risk of developing colon problems. Therefore, it is important to maintain a balanced diet for a healthy colon.

Hello,
I am interested in the mention of vitamin B12 in the introduction to Digestion Anatomy, where it is mentioned that microorganisms in the large intestine produce certain vitamins (B12 and K). Does this occur in a location where we no longer absorb B12? Is this why supplementation is necessary in the case of veganism? Thank you.

The gut microbiota can indeed produce B12 analogues, but the problem lies with their bioavailability and the site of production. For B12 to be absorbed, it must be bound to the intrinsic factor (a glycoprotein produced in the stomach), which allows B12 to be absorbed through the mucosa of the small intestine. For these reasons, there is a need for supportive supplementation in individuals who avoid consuming animal food sources.

Hello,
I came across your sentence here in the counseling section: Consuming chia seeds on an empty stomach supports intestinal peristalsis and significantly affects water metabolism in the large intestine. Do they help against constipation?
Thank you

Chia seeds contain a high proportion of soluble fiber, which is highly hygroscopic. This has a significant (i.e., positive) impact on alleviating symptoms of constipation. However, it is always necessary to consume the seeds with fluids, preferably water.

Lecturer and author of the educational system

Mgr. Martin Jelínek has been systematically involved in nutrition education since 1999. He is the founder of ATAC, the educational company behind NutriCourses, and the author of an educational system focused on nutrition, healthy lifestyle, and the practical application of nutrition knowledge.

He graduated from the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University in Brno. Throughout his professional career, he has combined nutrition, education, and the practical application of acquired knowledge. His educational system also includes the ZOF (Zone of Optimal Functioning) learning application, where students turn theory into practical work with meal plans.

In 2007, he launched the first intake of a six-month course focused on the education of nutrition advisors. Over time, this course became the foundation for the further development of the educational system and a range of specialised courses.
